Astoria Hotel Komotini

In the centre of Thrace, Komotini struggles to keep balance between traditional and contemporary reality.

The existence of the ancient town on the sites of the present-day town dates from the 4th century A.D. Komotini, on account of its position on the Via Egnatia, evolved gradually into a commercial centre. Its present-day name was first mentioned by the Emperor John VI Cantacuzenos and the Historian Nikiphoros Grigoras. Its present-day style was obtained in 1870. Since then it has developed economically and geographically. Today komotini is the Headquarter of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is also the commercial and touristic centre of South-Eastern Balkans.

The Hotel is a historical cultural heritage building designed by an architect called Othonas. It was built in 1900.

In 1933 it was bought by Nikolaos Papatheodorou and was made into a hotel in 1934.

The procedure of its radical restoration started in 1992.

The external building was restored with respect to the going architecture and the history of the building. The inside of the building was changed and decorated following the culture, the splendour and the luxury of classical style.

In 2009 the interior of the whole hotel was fully renovated.
